Why Did Jesus Cry,

"My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?"

Why Did Jesus Cry,

"My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?"

Understanding One of Jesus’ Most Mysterious and Powerful Words on the Cross

When Jesus was on the cross, suffering the most agonizing death, He cried out:

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
(Matthew 27:46, Mark 15:34)

Many have wondered, why would Jesus, the Son of God, feel abandoned by the Father? Was He truly forsaken? Or was there something deeper happening?

Let’s dive into the meaning behind these words and what they reveal about God’s plan for salvation, prophecy, and our own relationship with Him.

1. Jesus Was Fulfilling Prophecy

Jesus’ words were not random—they were a direct quote from Psalm 22:1, written by King David centuries earlier. Psalm 22 describes a righteous man suffering humiliation, torment, and rejection, but ultimately being delivered by God.

Look at the parallels between Psalm 22 and the crucifixion:

  • “They pierce my hands and my feet.” (Psalm 22:16) – This foreshadowed Jesus’ crucifixion.
  • “They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” (Psalm 22:18) – This happened exactly as described in Matthew 27:35.

By crying out Psalm 22:1, Jesus was pointing not to despair, but to prophecy, proving that He was the long-awaited Messiah.

2. Jesus Took on the Weight of Sin

The Bible tells us that Jesus became sin for us so that we could be made right with God:

“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
(2 Corinthians 5:21)

At that moment, Jesus bore the full weight of all sin—past, present, and future. Since sin separates us from God, Jesus experienced the separation that sinners deserve, even though He Himself was sinless.

For the first time ever, Jesus, who had always been in perfect unity with the Father, felt the pain of divine separation on our behalf.

3. Jesus Was Not Truly Abandoned—Victory Was Coming!

While Jesus experienced the agony of sin, He was not truly forsaken by God. Psalm 22, which begins in suffering, ends in victory:

“For He has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one;
He has not hidden His face from him but has listened to his cry for help.”

(Psalm 22:24)

Even in His darkest moment, Jesus trusted in God’s plan—knowing that His suffering was necessary for salvation.

Just three days later, Jesus rose from the grave, proving that God never abandoned Him and that death had been defeated!

4. What This Means for Us Today

Jesus took our place on the cross, experiencing separation from God so that we never have to. Because of His sacrifice, we can stand in God’s presence, fully forgiven and never forsaken.

💡 Hebrews 13:5“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

No matter how lost, broken, or distant from God you feel—He has not abandoned you. Jesus experienced that feeling so that you can always have access to the Father.

Final Thoughts: A Cry of Redemption, Not Despair

Jesus’ words on the cross were not just a cry of suffering, but a declaration of prophecy, sacrifice, and victory.

  • He fulfilled Psalm 22.
  • He bore the weight of our sins.
  • He conquered death and made a way for us to be with God forever.

His suffering brought our redemption—a gift of grace for all who believe in Him.
